The Washington family moved to the Ferry Farm, which is located on the Rappahannock River, in 1738. On display are Civil War and colonial relics which can be found on the property, and the lab which happens to be where archaeologists study their findings. Visitors have the opportunity to see the gardens that contain plants grown in the 18th century, as well as take a stroll down the old ferry road and hiking trails. There is also an interactive tour that includes photos, videos, and details about the Ferry Farm.
Government Island, a quarry site in the 18th and 19th century, is also a favorite for the history-loving individual. The quarry site provided the Aquia sandstone for the construction of the White House and U.S. Capitol building. In 1791, Pierre L’Enfant bought Government Island on behalf of the federal government to build the two landmarks. Now a natural park preserve, it’s also an archaeological site. It’s a great place to see wildlife, native and aquatic plants.
